New Haven Register: Fox News, Ann Coulter, the GOP, Ted Nugent -- and Don't Forget Toad's Place -- Embrace KKK's Message

Those who falsely smear the other side in an attempt to make an argument tend to do so because they have run out of real ones.?It would appear that the New Haven Register's argument cupboard is completely barren of everything but poisonous rhetoric.

In an opinion piece which I can hardly believe is a house editorial, the Register characterizes Ann Coulter, Fox News, the Republican Party, anyone who thinks George Zimmerman really was innocent, Ted Nugent, and Toad's Place, the venue where Nugent is playing next week, as among those who have "embraced" the "same basic message that the KKK has promoted for 148 years." Tellingly, the paper turns on many of its readers, adding "a burgeoning array of fringe 'conservative' media and members of our own community commenting on stories on the New Haven Register?s website" to the KKK-sympathetic cadre. Brace yourself for what follows after the jump, and ask yourself why any person of genuine good will -- left, right, or middle -- would willingly support a publication such as this.

Story Continues Below Ad ?

The background is that the United Klans of America, in a crass and brazen move, left fliers on the driveways and lawns of many residents of the Nutmeg State town of Milford about three weeks ago. The fliers read, "Neighborhood Watch: You can sleep well tonight knowing the UKA is awake." Given that the phone number at the bottom of the flyer is a VOIP line from Decatur, Alabama, which happens to be the same phone number as that found at the KKK's home page (not linked for obvious reasons), it's hard to see why anyone would be sleeping well at all.

Here's more from a story at WABC Eyewitness News:

Police are investigating and seeking witnesses who saw people distributing the fliers.

"It's a pathetic little attempt to get some press and some attention for his very, very weak group," said Mark Potok, senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist and hate groups.

But Potok said it's good for political leaders to condemn such moves.

These reactions are perfectly appropriate, given the Klan's murderous record.

What isn't appropriate is the Register using this Klan stunt as a opportunity to tar and feather conservatism:

Everyone knows the disgusting history of that movement and how disgusting one?s mindset has to be to embrace the label today. And everyone should know what a ?neighborhood patrol? by the KKK is all about.

Meanwhile, though, the same basic message that the KKK has promoted for 148 years is embraced by the likes of Ted Nugent, Fox News, Ann Coulter, a burgeoning array of fringe ?conservative? media and members of our own community commenting on stories on the New Haven Register?s website.

Nugent will be in New Haven Aug. 6 with prominent billing for a concert at respected local music institution Toad?s Place. He has brought the KKK?s traditional message to the mainstream -- to the point of being embraced by the leaders of the Republican Party during the last presidential election campaign (against the re-election of a black president, it should be pointed out).

That message includes black people being an inferior race (note Nugent?s blanket statements that black people don?t work as hard as white people, are criminals, etc.), a fear of and opposition to immigration and expressions of disgust and hatred toward gay people.

The KKK has historically billed itself as a vigilante group, a concept that the gun-glorifying Nugent and supporters of George Zimmerman, ?stand your ground? laws and the profiling of young black men in hoodies embrace as well.

So, "neighborhood watch" is the new "KKK," just because a few KKK nuts used the term.

Continuing:

Nugent and like-minded people aren?t openly aligning themselves with the Klan, but their message isn?t much less hateful.

With that in mind, we shouldn?t need a label as obvious as ?KKK? to call out and condemn hatred and racism. Institutions who are helping ?mainstream? this message -- even if that?s Fox News, the national Republican Party, or Toad?s Place -- deserve to be called out and, if ultimately necessary, marginalized and ostracized for enabling it.

This comes off as a despicable and desperate attempt by an arrogant elite which is utterly out of coherent arguments to shut down rational discussion and debate in their community.

I don't think I have to respond further to this slanderous nonsense when commenters, especially at NewsBusters, will collectively do a much better job.

But I can imagine that the Register's coverage of the Tea Party movement has been far less than stellar.

Unique Activities and Games for Pets

It seems as though pet parents are always looking for a way to spend some quality bonding time with their beloved furry friends. These fun pet activities can help you and your pet build a growing relationship and bond together. I especially love some of the cat activities in this sponsored guest post. Please enjoy and let me know if you've ever done any of these things with your dog or cat in the comments section!?

---

Looking for something different to do with your pet? Is playing ?fetch? with your pooch getting old, or is your cat getting tired of chasing after a laser pointer? There are plenty of unique, out-of-the-box activities for you and your pet. Here are some fun and interesting games for pets, divided between dog activities and cat activities.

Dog Activities

  1. Dog disc ? This game of dog/owner flying disc is a challenging and fun activity for both of you. Discs come in a variety of sizes; choose a disc that works with your dog?s size, and make sure it is not too heavy or large for your pup. Do not let your pooch chew on the disc as a damaged disc could hurt your dog?s mouth when it catches the disc. If you and your dog are especially skilled at dog disc, consider entering a dog disc competition.
  2. Agility courses ? Agility courses are obstacle courses for dogs, but they require the dog?s owner to guide the dog through the course. It is a team activity for you and your dog. You can build your own or take your dog to a training center to be trained in a course. To keep your dog safe, make sure it is protected with a pet insurance policy.?
  3. Dog yoga ? This unique owner/pet activity is becoming increasingly popular. See if a local yoga studio or dog training center near you offers dog yoga, often called ?doga.? This doggie yoga allows you to help stretch your pup?s muscles as well as your own. Make sure to bring treats to reward and encourage good behavior at the class.

Cat Activities

  1. Create a playground ? A homemade playground is one of many fun games for pets, especially cats. Make a unique play area for your cat using household items; cardboard boxes and paper grocery bags are great options. Your cat will enjoy exploring the boxes and playing with the crinkly paper bags.?
  2. Download an iPad game ? There are now iPad games created just for cats. One game features a mouse that zooms across the screen. Your cat will try to chase or paw at the mouse on your iPad screen. This could provide hours of entertainment for both of you.
  3. Teach a cat tricks ? Contrary to popular belief, cats can do tricks, too. They can be trained to come, sit and stay. Training your cat may require a bit more patience than training a dog, but with the right motivation, it is possible. Treats work well as incentives because unlike dogs, cats do not inherently desire to please their owners, and extra motivation in the form of food helps.
  4. Play hockey. -?Ball up a piece of aluminum foil to create a lightweight ?hockey puck? for your cat to chase. Because the foil is light and crushable, your cat will be able to grab it easily (and you won?t have to worry about a heavy ball breaking something in your house). Tip: hard surface floors work best for this game as the foil puck will slide easily across them. After you and your feline are finished playing, make sure to dispose of the aluminum puck.

Whether you have a dog or cat, these activities and games for pets guarantee an interesting experience with your furry friend.? Try one or all of the games listed above and see which ones your pet enjoys the most. Before you drive to the yoga studio or dog training center, make sure you and your pet are protected with an insurance policy. From doing doga to building a kitty playground, you and your pet will explore exciting new games and most of all, have fun.Christina Miller loves to write, especially about business. Gordon Logan discusses how to succeed (and fail) at franchising ...

If you?re a boy or man, there is nothing very attractive about heading to the neighborhood beauty shop for a haircut. Gordon Logan saw a need in the hair care market for a business that catered to men, and the venture paid off.

Though Logan has made it big in hair care, that?s not where he got his start. He was a management consultant at Price Waterhouse in Houston when he read a Wall Street Journal article about a growing salon franchise.

Logan decided it was worth investing in a franchise with the same company. Unfortunately, the company was better at marketing than it was at operating and went through a bankruptcy just a year later.

The following tumult educated Logan on what not to do when running a franchise, so he was ready when he took over the franchise in 2001.

Since then, he?s added 1,000 stores that employ more than 10,000 people.

For more, check out the video.

(AP) ? With a cast of characters that has presided over numerous failed Middle East peace efforts, the Obama administration launched a fresh bid Monday to pull Israel and the Palestinians into substantive negotiations.

Despite words of encouragement, deep skepticism about the prospects for success surrounded the initial discussions, which were opening with a dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry. He named a former U.S. ambassador to Israel to shepherd what all sides believe will be a protracted and difficult process.

Former envoy Martin Indyk, who played key roles in the Clinton administration's multiple, unsuccessful pushes to broker peace deals between Israel and Syria and Israel and the Palestinians, will assume the day-to-day responsibility for keeping the talks alive for the next nine months.

Kerry called Indyk a "seasoned diplomat" and said he "knows what has worked and he knows what hasn't worked." Neither Kerry nor the State Department would say what has worked in the past, although the fact that there is no peace deal now would seem to indicate that nothing has worked in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian standoff.

President Barack Obama echoed Kerry's hopeful sentiment in a White House statement that said Indyk "brings unique experience and insight to this role, which will allow him to contribute immediately as the parties begin down the tough, but necessary, path of negotiations."

The Israeli side will be led by chief negotiator Tzipi Livni, a former foreign minister who was active in the Bush's administration's ill-fated Annapolis peace talks with the Palestinians, and Yitzhak Molcho, a veteran adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who was part of the Israeli team involved in Obama's two previous attempts to broker negotiations. Those two efforts relied heavily on Dennis Ross, a former Indyk colleague and Mideast peace envoy, and veteran negotiator George Mitchell.

The Palestinian team will be led by chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and President Mahmoud Abbas' adviser, Mohammed Shtayyeh, both of whom have been major players in failed negotiations with the Israelis since 1991.

Kerry spoke for about 45 minutes with representatives from the Israeli negotiating team and then another roughly 45 minutes with the Palestinian side before sitting down for dinner on the top floor of the State Department.

"Not very much to talk about at all," Kerry joked just before starting dinner shortly after 9 p.m.

They sat at a rectangular table ? five U.S. officials lining one side and the two Israeli and two Palestinian negotiators on the other ? to dine on sweet corn and shell bean soup, grilled grouper, saffron risotto, summer vegetables and apricot upside down cake.

Despite the presence of so many people whose past experience does not include success, Kerry and other officials voiced cautious optimism about the resumption of talks which he painstakingly negotiated during six months of shuttle diplomacy that began with Obama's own trip to Israel in March.

"It sounds like we're lucky to have decades of experience ready to come back to the table and make an effort to push forward," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Previous attempts to get talks started have foundered on Israel's continued construction of Jewish settlements on land claimed by the Palestinians and Palestinian attempts to win international recognition as a sovereign state in the absence of a peace deal. Actual negotiations have died because the two sides have been unable to compromise on the most serious disagreements between them: borders, the status of Jerusalem, refugees and security.

With a U.S.-imposed gag order on revealing any details about the substance or framework of the talks, gauging progress will be difficult. But the outlines of any eventual peace deal are fairly well known: a Palestinian state based on the lines that existed before the 1967 war in which Israel seized east Jerusalem and occupied the Palestinian territories, with agreed land swaps and recognition of a secure, Jewish state of Israel.

But neither side will publicly commit to those goals, and getting there will require major concessions that will be difficult to sell to the Israeli and Palestinian publics.

Ahead of the initial discussions on procedures and guidelines for the meetings, which the U.S. hopes will grow into deeper, more substantive talks on the key sticking points, Kerry urged both sides to strive for "reasonable compromises on tough, complicated, emotional and symbolic issues."

He acknowledged that the path ahead would be long and difficult. But he said that Indyk had the respect and confidence of all involved and that his vast experience in Middle East diplomacy could only help.

"Ambassador Indyk is realistic," Kerry said. "He understands that Israeli-Palestinian peace will not come easily and it will not happen overnight. But he also understands that there is now a path forward and we must follow that path with urgency. He understands that to ensure that lives are not needlessly lost, we have to ensure that opportunities are not needlessly lost."

Indyk, 62, will take a leave of absence from his current job as vice president and foreign policy director at the Washington-based Brookings Institution think tank.

In announcing Indyk's appointment, Kerry noted the former ambassador had opened the preface to his 2009 book, "Innocent Abroad: An Intimate Account of American Peacemaking Diplomacy in the Middle East," with lines from the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

"If men could learn from history, what lessons it would teach us," Kerry quoted.

He did not continue to the next lines as Indyk did in his book:

"But passion and party blind our eyes,"

"And the light which experience gives us is a lantern on the stern,"

"Which shines only on the waves behind us."

Facebook to make capital investments worth $1.6 bn in 2013

Facebook shelled out USD 221 million on acquisitions and other assets such as patents. (AP)Social networking giant Facebook, whose user base is expanding primarily on the back of rising penetration in emerging markets like India and Brazil, will make capital investments worth USD 1.6 billion this year.

In the first half of this year, the California-based firm incurred a capital expenditure of USD 595 million on setting up data centres and storage infrastructure, among others.

Besides, Facebook shelled out USD 221 million on acquisitions and other assets such as patents.

"We anticipate making capital expenditures in 2013 of approximately USD 1.6 billion," Facebook said in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Industry watchers feel that the company will be looking to capitalise on its user numbers and its mobile advertising base.

Bolstered by rising number of users in high growth markets like India and Brazil, Facebook raked in 61 per cent -- USD 1.60 billion -- of its total revenues from advertising in the second quarter of this year.

Internet major Google, which is also competing with Facebook, generated 92 per cent of its revenues from its advertisers in the six months ended June 30.

Facebook's investment plans for increasing infrastructure would get a boost as it posted strong second quarter results helped by a surge in userbase and rising mobile ad revenue, which now represents 41 per cent of its total revenue from advertising, they added.

Facebook posted a net income of USD 333 million for the April-June quarter against a loss of USD 157 million in year-ago period. Its revenue totalled USD 1.81 billion in the

Radio, TV personality David 'Kidd' Kraddick dies

David "Kidd" Kraddick, the high-octane radio and TV host of the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show heard on dozens of U.S. radio stations, has died at a charity golf event near New Orleans, a publicist said. Kraddick was 53.

The Texas-based radio and television personality, whose program is syndicated by YEA Networks, died at his Kidd's Kids charity function in the New Orleans suburb of Gretna on Saturday, said publicist Ladd Biro in releasing a network statement.

"He died doing what he loved," said Biro, of the public relations firm Champion Management, speaking with AP by phone early Sunday. He said he had no further details on the death.

The "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show is heard on more than 75 Top 40 and Hot AC radio stations and is a leader among most-listened-to contemporary morning programs, Biro said. The radio program also is transmitted globally on American Forces Radio Network while the show's cast is also seen weeknights on the nationally syndicated TV show "Dish Nation," he added.

"All of us with YEA Networks and the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" crew are heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend and leader," the network statement said. "Kidd devoted his life to making people smile every morning, and for 21 years his foundation has been dedicated to bringing joy to thousands of chronically and terminally ill children."

"He died doing what he loved, and his final day was spent selflessly focused on those special children that meant the world to him," it added.

The Dallas Morning News reported Kraddick had been a staple in the Dallas market since 1984, starting in a late-night debut. The newspaper said he moved into morning show work by the early 1990s in that market and his show began to gain wider acclaim and entered into syndication by 2001 as he gained a following in cities nationwide.

Kraddick would have turned 54 on Aug. 22, according to Biro.

The network statement said the cause of death would be released "at the appropriate time."

Many fans, celebrities included, tweeted condolences and talked about the death on social media sites. One Texas radio station where he was a mainstay ran photographs on its website of Kraddick at the microphone.

Word of Kraddick's passing spread quickly via social media.

"RIP Kidd Kraddick. You were an amazing man and a friend. You are already missed," Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted.

"Oh Man, I just heard Kidd Kraddick died! He's my childhood dj. What a sad day. His poor family. He was always nice 2 me from the beginning," singer Kelly Clarkson tweeted.

Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, only recently announced as the headline act of a planned first-ever Kidd's Kids charity concert in Dallas next month, wrote: "The sad sad news about Kidd Kraddick is shocking. He will be missed greatly."

Richie Tomblin, described as the head golf professional at the Timberlane Country Club in Gretna on its website, told AP that Kraddick wasn't looking well when he saw him getting ready for Saturday's charity event.

"He came out and he borrowed my golf clubs and went out to the driving range," Tomblin told AP when contacted by phone. "It's kind of a freaky situation. He came out. He practiced a little bit. He hit the ball at the first tee and wasn't feeling good and after that I didn't see him."

Tomblin said the hundreds of amateur golfers taking part went ahead with the event Saturday. He added he only found out afterward that Kraddick had died and he was still shaken about it.

"I'm still trying to figure it out. I really don't know what happened. Everyone keeps texting me asking, 'What's going on?' I really don't know," said Tomblin.

He added he was reluctant to even touch the set of clubs Kraddick had borrowed Saturday for his practice swings.

ATLANTA -- LeBron James is taking some of his talents during the offseason to a best-selling basketball video game franchise as a music curator.

2K Sports announced Friday that the two-time NBA champion of the Miami Heat selected 20 songs for the soundtrack of the upcoming ?NBA 2K14.? The league?s four-time MVP is also the cover athlete of the popular video game.

James said in a statement that he is honored to be the first cover athlete to choose songs for the soundtrack. He follows his friend and Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z, who was the executive producer of the last year?s installment that sold more than 4.5 million copies.

?2K is letting me take control of some important elements in NBA 2K14, including this year?s soundtrack,? James said. ?I love that I?m the first NBA 2K cover athlete to choose the soundtrack.?

Some of the songs featured on the game?s soundtrack are Drake?s ?Started From The Bottom,? Phil Collins? ?In the Air Tonight,? Daft Punk?s ?Get Lucky,? featuring Pharrell Williams and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis? ?Can?t Hold Us,? with Ray Dalton. Other music acts featured are Jay-Z, Coldplay, Robin Thicke, The Black Keys, Eminem, Fly Union, Gorillaz, Imagine Dragons, Jada Kiss, John Legend, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and Puff Daddy.

James is the first solo cover athlete to cover the game in two years since Michael Jordan. The game is expected to go on sale Oct. 1.

Foster Care: Our Love story: When Foster Care is Good

Being a foster parent is hard, and it's easy to complain about it 24/7 on a loop. Many foster parents and foster bloggers do this- myself included- and it's not just because we're self absorbed brats. We really want to educate and prepare others who are about the embark on this journey. It's also an act of solidarity to speak out against "the man". We want to let the others know they are not alone in dark places.

Clearly, though, there are bright spots. Moments of purity and hope that keep us coming back for more. I've had a lot of those recently.

Moving from 2 kids to 3 was an adjustment for me. Baby Girl was sick during the past month, but even on a good day she needs a lot of medical attention. Baby 4 had all of his end of the school year field trips and family days before being home for summer break. Baby 9 is, well, a newborn, and as such needs me all the time. I've been urging my husband to go back to school for 10 years, and doesn't this punk decide to start listening to me now? So our schedule has been jam packed, but in a really good way.

Baby 9 is a delight. She sleeps and eats like a champ. She smiles in her sleep and sticks her tongue out proudly when you talk to her. I dress her up like my own real life doll and parade her around in different headbands and hair bows everyday. Her case was dead for the first 2 months, but now we are going to court pretty regularly and having a lot of visits.

I feel like I'm doing her case right. I'm completely attached to her- committed for life, yet I fully expect her to reunify with her Mom. I have not freaked out once yet over her case, even though some craziness has occurred (like the caseworker holding a service plan review without telling me). I have a prior connection to Mom that has given me some perspective. We had mutual friends in high school and spent prom together. It makes it easier to root for her. It makes it easier to understand her and appreciate how much she loves 9. I'm not as scared as I have been in past cases. Not because this case is less scary, but because I'm not trying to fix anything. I'm trusting the process. Oh, the plan is for baby to live in a halfway house? Sounds good. What? That plan fell through? Perfect. Overnight visits already? Sure! Judge said no? Works for me.

We'll see how long I can keep this going. I feel like giving this "good foster mom" attitude a solid try before going back to the Mama Bear mode where I'm most comfortable albeit more stressed.

When I think back on the good times in foster care, all our Hallelujah calls come to mind first. The rush of the moment you know your life has changed forever. Most people only get a handful of those moments: graduations, weddings, births, big moves, new jobs. I've gotten all the normal moments AND 7 calls that my family will never look the same after I hang up the phone. Those calls are addicting.

I also think about the normal family moments that we get in between caseworkers and court dates. I don't get around to blogging those much because I'm busy experiencing them. Going to the splash park on sweaty summer days and watching my son climb and splash with other kids, catching my baby's first steps on video, and making crazy faces with my kids and giggling until our stomachs hurt. The hugs and kisses and bedtime songs. Foster Care is a big force in our world, but sometimes we forget it's there for an hour or maybe even a day. Those times are good.

Foster Care is good when I'm surrounded by other people on this road. I have great friends and family. I've been blessed. But I feel most comfortable and accepted when I'm with foster parents. We all earned our stripes, and even when our ideology differs, we belong in the club. I really love other foster parents.

The good part of foster care is not what I expected. I went into this thinking adoption would be the silver lining. Foster Care was a means to an end for us. Now that we are getting closer to Baby 4's possible adoption, I'm realizing it's less of a "win" than I thought. I'm so honored to be his Mom and making it legal is awesome, but the getting here was good. Watching and facilitating the healing that brought us to the point where we even want to be a family- that was the good part.

What sticks out to me most when I hear or participate in foster care horror story exchange is that we all would do it again. I have never heard a foster parent say, "I wish I had never taken that kid" or "If I knew then what I know now, I'd never have gotten certified". A life with no regrets? That's when foster care is good.

Boomerang gets pushy with Gmail notifications, multi-message selection

DNP Boomerang adds push notifications and multiinbox support

Boomerang's latest update adds tweaked functionality, moving it from one-trick unicorn territory to a possible Gmail app-replacement. Developer Baydin's improvements include Google Cloud Messaging-based push notifications, the ability to "send from" and multi-message selection for bulk mailbox organizing. If you're a fan of the email giant's new tabbed inbox, you're out of luck for now -- everything here is still lumped into one list. If you ask politely enough though, we're sure the dev will consider supporting it; version 0.8's shiny features were community suggested, after all.

Bradley Manning trial closing arguments ask: Why did he do it?

The trial of Army Pfc. Bradley Manning ? accused of leaking the largest trove of classified information in US history ? is winding down as prosecution and defense present their arguments.

When they?re finished, military judge Col. Denise Lind will decide the future of the young intelligence analyst, who could spend the rest of his life in prison.

The facts in the case are not in dispute: While serving in Iraq in 2009 and 2010, Private Manning provided more than 700,000 classified files, combat videos, and diplomatic cables to the whistle-blower group WikiLeaks. Many of the cables were embarrassing for the US, candidly and sometimes critically assessing officials from other countries (some of them allies).

RECOMMENDED: How well do you know the world of spying? Take our CIA and NSA quiz.

Specifically, Manning is charged with aiding the enemy; wrongfully causing intelligence to be published on the Internet, knowing that it is accessible to the enemy; theft of public property or records; transmitting defense information; fraud and related activity in connection with computers; and violating Army regulations and an information security program. There are 21 charges in all, including violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and the Espionage Act of 1917.

Under the UCMJ, Manning was able to choose to have his case decided by a single judge rather than a panel of military officers.

In closing, the two sides in this lengthy legal battle are painting two very different pictures of Manning.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

The defense says he?s an idealist who became disillusioned by what he learned in Iraq and that he was trying to save lives by revealing secrets about US operations there.

Attorneys for Manning argue that no real harm was done to US national security interests, pointing to testimony from one witness (retired Air Force Col. Morris Davis, the former chief prosecutor at Guant?namo Bay, Cuba) who said that much of the information in the ?detainee assessment briefs? revealed by Manning was easily available from open sources, including government sources.

The defense also seeks to undermine the most serious charge: aiding the enemy, specifically Al Qaeda and its affiliate in Iraq, by showing that Manning had no intention to do so.

In their closing arguments, military prosecutors say far from being an idealist, Manning was arrogant, reckless, and self-centered, looking for publicity.

"He delivered hundreds of thousands of documents ready-to-use to WikiLeaks, he delivered them for notoriety,? lead prosecution lawyer Maj. Ashden Fein told the court Thursday. ?He searched for as much information as he knew would guarantee his fame, information that he knew that WikiLeaks wanted to publicly release.?

Major Fein also stressed the direct connection between what Manning leaked and Al Qaeda, including information gathered when Osama bin Laden was killed by US Navy SEALs.

?He had actual knowledge that the enemies of the US used the Internet and WikiLeaks to gather information to be used against this country," Fein said. ?He knew releasing such information on the Internet would be in the hands of terrorists and other adversaries of this nation.?

Beyond the specific charges and their possible resolution, the Manning case has drawn public attention worldwide for related, in some ways sensational reasons.

The most riveting of the leaked classified material was the video showing a US attack helicopter firing on what turned out to be unarmed civilians in Iraq. Eleven men were killed in the Apache helicopter attack, including two Reuters journalists ? a reminder of the callousness of war involving collateral damage, including noncombatant casualties.

Then there was Manning?s treatment while waiting to be charged and tried under the UCMJ.

For months before his trial began, Manning was held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day at the US Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., treatment critics said was inhumane and unnecessary. Speaking at a seminar in 2011, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley called that treatment ?ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid? ? a personal outburst that cost Mr. Crowley (a retired Air Force colonel) his job as assistant secretary for public affairs.

More recently, another case involving classified leaks connected to WikiLeaks ? that of former National Security Agency (NSA) civilian contractor Edward Snowden ? has enlivened the debate over national secrets, including entrusting such secrets to relatively low-level analysts able to peruse and disseminate such material for personal and political reasons.

Meanwhile, a key figure in both the Manning and Snowden cases ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange ? has spent more than a year holed-up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in order to avoid questioning about alleged sexual offenses in Sweden.

During the trial, Colonel Lind refused most efforts by Manning?s lawyers to have the charges against their client dismissed or limited ? including the most serious charge, aiding the enemy.

But those who have worked with Lind (who also teaches at George Washington University Law School) describe her as a ?model of fairness,? reports The Washington Post.

?She?ll go through every bit of evidence and every element of proof, and she will be 100 percent sure that the government meets its burden,? said Lisa Schenck, associate dean for academic affairs at the law school. ?She is the most thorough person that you could put on that trial.?

US business 'bible' sends an apology to Republic of Ireland's president over gay claim

Forbes has apologied to President Michael D Higgins over an error in one of its online articles

The renowned business magazine that claimed Irish president Michael D Higgins is gay has apologised to the President.

'Forbes', one of the foremost financial magazines in the US, was forced to make the embarrassing apology a day after it pulled a story, which described the Mr Higgins as an "acknowledged homosexual".

Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore said the claim by the so-called 'business bible'' about the happily married President was an "embarrassment" for the author rather than anyone else.

"On the 'Forbes' article, I understand it was online and was taken down.

"That tells us everything we need to know about that article. It is more a source of embarrassment for the journalist who wrote it rather than it is for anyone else," he said.

A spokeswoman for 'Forbes' said the magazine seriously regretted the error and would be sending a written apology to Mr Higgins.

In a statement, issued almost 24 hours after the article was pulled from its website, the magazine said: "On July 23, a contributor to Forbes.com posted an article about American UN Ambassador nominee Samantha Power that contained a serious error concerning the President of Ireland, Mr Michael D Higgins.

"Both Forbes and the author of the post David Monagan sincerely regret the error. Forbes is issuing an apology to President Higgins in a separate correspondence."

"Mr Monagan is part of Forbes.com's contributor network and the article in question did not appear in Forbes magazine," it added.

Mr Monagan, a US citizen who lives in Cork, has already issued a heartfelt apology for the "terrible" error which he described as the "worst mistake I've ever made".

When approached at his home in Cork yesterday, Mr Monagan said he is to write to Mr Higgins to personally apologise for the mistake. The author, who moved to Ireland 10 years ago, said he cannot believe he made such "an inexcusable error" and feels "absolutely terrible" over what happened.

"I just want to offer my sincere apology to the President and his family for what happened," he said.

He previously told this newspaper that the error was made "under deadline pressure".

"I have been reporting on the most complex, difficult things, including cardiovascular medicine, for 35 years and I have never had a mistake like this."

Mr Monagan is the author of two books on Ireland and said that, in the millions of words he has written on this country, "that's the worst mistake I've ever made."

In his article on Ms Power, Mr Monagan wrote: "The current president of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, is a poet, acknowledged homosexual, and nearly as outspoken as his predecessors."

New Nexus 7 with LTE headed to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile (update: 32GB LTE model available in the 'coming weeks')

Google's new Nexus 7 refresh with LTE headed to AT&T, Verizon and TMobile

Coming as no surprise at all, Google's just unveiled its newest Nexus 7 tablet at a breakfast meeting in San Francisco this morning. What has caught us off guard, however, is news that the Android 4.3 tablet will bow on three of the US' top wireless carriers -- that's AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile -- as a single SKU and with support for LTE. No release date or pricing has yet been announced for the 7-incher, but when it does launch, it'll be the premier device to ship with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Update: Google's just released pricing and availability for the new Nexus 7, pegging the WiFi version for a July 30th bow in-store and online. There'll be two configurations -- a 16GB and 32GB -- that'll retail for $229 and $269, respectively. Users that prefer to wait for the LTE-enabled version will have to fork over $349 for a 32GB model, although this variant still doesn't have a solid street date; Google's saying it'll hit retail in the "coming weeks."

Holy Honami, Sony! Xperia Z heir reportedly outed yet again

Sony?s heavily-rumoured new flagship mobile unit, believed to be codenamed Honami, offers reportedly manufactured another general public appearance in an array of lost snapshots.

The unit, which could turn up named the Xperia 1i, has been likely as a 20-megapixel smart phone to sit together with the larger, just lately launched Panasonic Xperia Z Really phablet.

If these new snaps show to be credible, the particular Honami (or 1i, or even whatever) may arrive searching an awful lot like the current technology, with a few significant exceptions.

Indeed, your snaps highlight an extremely trim device, with clearly described square ends and that signature, premium The new sony design words. However, it can look as if Sony will be throwing the glass backplate in to the mix this time around.

Meanwhile the bottom of these devices sports the exposed loudspeaker perforations, meaning it?s less unlikely to arrive sticking with the same waterproof and dustproof certifications because the Xperia Z.

    20-megapixel digital camera?

The latest photos of the gadget, which arrived via the Gadget Helpline website, appear to back up just what previous leaking have already proposed: Despite the odds of a very big sensor size, Homani won?t pack a sticking out camera element, a los angeles the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Previous leaks get suggested there?ll be a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon Eight hundred chip, Qualcomm Adreno 330 images, 2GB of memory space, 16GB of storage, microSD, LTE and also NFC support.

It almost is obvious that the supposed a 5-inch exhibit will be full HD, even though a 2-megapixel top camera, plus a 3,500 mAh battery sounds out the specification on the handset sheet.

Could your Sony Xperia 1i with the next digital camera phone master? With these stated specs, it?d take some whipping.

Presidency pledges support for insurance sector - Vanguard

    By ROSEMARY ONUOHA

President Goodluck Jonathan has said his administration is aware that insurance is an essential ingredient of economic growth and development of any country and will support the insurance sector in Nigeria.

Jonathan who said this on the occasion of his decoration as grand patron of West African Insurance Institute (WAII) last week said that without insurance, companies and individuals would not be able to manage risk; the world would be a far less innovative place and many of the activities people and government take for granted could be prohibitively risky.

He said ?So we value insurance, more so the Nigeria insurance industry has been making useful contributions to our economic life.?

The President said that one of the major lessons of the economic turmoil in the recent past is the need for transparent, efficient and neutral government regulation of the financial services sector. ?We believe that this is the right platform upon which accessible, robust and dynamic markets for financial products are built. This administration clearly understands and recognizes this fact and has actually embarked on policies designed towards achieving growth and development in the insurance industry in the country,? he said.

?This is evident under the Group Life Insurance Policy where the federal government has provided the lead by ensuring that its entire employees are fully insured. In the same light, Government has also ensured adequate insurance of its assets and property. In line with our transformation agenda, a key driver of the current reforms in the insurance sub-sector of the Nigerian economy is the desire to grow and develop the micro-insurance and Takaful markets. It is the hope of this administration that the drive will engender the desired growth and market penetration.?

?Suffice to say that the on-going reforms in our insurance sector are aimed at creating a world-class regime for insurers and provide significantly enhanced protection for Nigerian policyholders.?

?Within the purview of Vision 20:2020, government envisions an economy that will rank among the twenty largest in the world by the year 2020 and insurance is a veritable growth driver. It is on this premise that this administration has continued to show adequate support to the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the industry regulatory body in its drive to develop the insurance market and deepen penetration,? the President said.
