Mamma Mia Entertaining Theatregoers at the Novello Theatre

How can you resist watching Mamma Mia, one of West End's spectacular shows? Winner of numerous international awards, the musical has been wooing theater audience in London since 1999. Based on Catherine Johnson's story, Mamma Mia transports audiences to the breathtaking serene of Greece. To make the romantic comedy further more sizzling ABBA numbers accompany it in background. The show is suitable for an entire family and promises to bring smile on faces of each of the members.

The show ran for five years at the Prince Edward Theater where it made its London debut. It was later transferred to the Prince of Wales where it enjoyed run for eight years. It commenced its run at the present at the Novello Theatre London in 2012. One of West End's notable venues, Novello is located on Aldwych in the City of Westminster, London. The house was built as a pair to the Aldwych Theatre while the Waldorf Hotel stood between both the edifices. The notable architect of his time, W.G.R. Sprague designed both the structures. The venue opened on 22nd May 1905 as Waldorf but in 1909 it was named the Strand while in 1911 it was renamed as Whitney and in 1913 again as Strand. In 2005 it was given its current name after Ivor Novello, who resided in one of the flats above the venue between 1913 and 1951.

The house had its first successful show as Arsenic and Old Lace that made its debut here in 1940 and ran for 1337 performances. It was followed by the success of Sailor Beware! That opened here in 1955 and ran for 1231 performances. The day when the world was shocked with the unfortunate assassination of American president Kennedy, the musical by Stephen Sondheim called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum made its opening here. The show received immense success and enjoyed run for over two years.

The venue was almost rebuilt completely in 1930 and 1970s. The house was Grade II listed by the English Heritage on 20th July 1971. In 2005, grand celebrations were hosted here when The Rat Pack: Live from Las Vegas celebrates its 100th anniversary. The same year the theatre was extensively refurbished and instated seating capacity of 1,105. When it reopened on 8th December 2005 Royal Shakespeare Company's annual London season was hosted here that enjoyed a four weeks run. Shows that were performed here during the period include Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors, A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You like It.

Mamma Mia is one of the most popular shows that have run at the Novello Theatre's history. Listed among one of London's longest running musical, it features some of the greatest ABBA numbers. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, musical is the story of a mother daughter duo who are caught in the events of their past. The same creative team of the musical presented the immensely successful 2008 movie with the same name. ABBA classics that are a part of the show along with the title track includes Does Your Mother Know?, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Take a Chance on Me.
