Opening of new Purdue rec center delayed | WLFI - West Lafayette ...

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Students, faculty and staff at Purdue may have to wait longer than they?d hoped to get into a finished section of the new rec center.

The next phase for partially opening Purdue?s Recreational Sports Center has been postponed from Friday until Oct. 9 due to testing of the fire alarm systems.

"We apologize for any inconvenience and for the late notice. The alarm systems were not available to be tested until just this week," Division of Recreational Sports Director Howard Taylor said. "During testing every device is activated to ensure it operates properly. The constant noise of fire alarms going on and off would not allow for an appropriate fitness and wellness atmosphere.

"Additionally, for the safety of our users, we want to be certain that all of the life/safety systems are functioning before we open the facility. "

Roughly 75 percent of the student recreation facility, soon to be officially named the France A. C?rdova Recreational Sports Center, was supposed to open up this Friday.

The grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 12, when the dedication and naming ceremony will also take place. By that time the rest of the fitness and multipurpose spaces, the multi-activity court, and the climbing wall will be complete.
