Chris Lightcap's 'Lost And Found New York' On JazzSet

When Chris Lightcap was a student in the Berkshires, he'd put his bass in his car and drive down the river to New York City, south on the Taconic to the Sawmill, over the Henry Hudson Bridge, up on a soaring bluff with a great view to the right of the New Jersey Palisades and George Washington Bridge and New York City coming up on the left. Right about there, Lightcap would ask himself, "What would it be like to live here?"

Lost and Found New York is Lightcap's suite for the vistas and feelings, smells and sounds of his adopted city. "Nine South" is the first movement, for the highway he used to drive into Manhattan from the north. "Arthur Avenue" is for a leisurely lunch in the so-called Little Italy of the Bronx. "Epicenter" connotes the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village, where Lightcap has experienced "life-changing moments" listening to music. Is it the spirits of the musicians who have played there, or the shape of the room itself? "Epicenter" is the most arranged of the movements in Lost and Found New York.

"Fort Tryon" becomes more meditative, for The Cloisters — inspired by the castles of Europe — and gardens in Fort Tryon Park. In the Gilded Age, John D. Rockefeller funded the area's development. From the stage, Lightcap tells his version of the story, but The Cloisters' website is more authoritative:

The modern museum building is not a copy of any specific medieval structure but an ensemble of spaces, rooms, and gardens that suggest a variety of artistic aspects of medieval Europe.

Last, Stillwell Avenue is the subway stop for Coney Island on the south shore of Brooklyn, where Chris Lightcap, his wife Victoria and sons Sebastian and Theo love the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone ride (you can feel their rhythm driving the music), Nathan's Hot Dogs, and the zany people who relax there. The city is cleaning Coney Island up, though Lightcap hopes not too much.

In The New York Times, Nate Chinen tracked a performance of "Lost and Found" from beginning to end, from "... springy syncopations for bass and piano, hard-skittering drumming, a declaratory line played by the horns, first in octaves and then in splintered harmony" to the last stop. "Barreling ahead, straining at the curves, the group sounded wild but focused, down to the end of the line."

(AP) — Dallas Crawford turned in a big performance in relief of Miami's star runner to keep the No. 10 Hurricanes unbeaten.

Crawford had a 3-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left to give Miami a 27-23 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night.

Crawford's short score ended a 90-yard drive by the Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who lost top rusher Duke Johnson to an early injury. But Crawford finished with 137 yards on 33 carries — surpassing his season totals in both categories — and two touchdowns to help the Hurricanes barely avoid a big upset.

The Hurricanes won despite Stephen Morris throwing four interceptions, as many as he had thrown all year, while the defense surrendered a season-high 500 yards against the Tar Heels' no-huddle scheme.

But Miami got the stop it needed at the end, with Bryn Renner's final heave into the end zone from the Miami 28 falling incomplete on the game's final play.

The loss was the latest stinging setback for the Tar Heels (1-5, 0-3), who entered the year with hopes of winning the ACC's Coastal Division but now find themselves off to their worst start since 2006. They led this one 23-13 early in the fourth only to see Crawford score twice in the final 11½ minutes to erase the deficit.

Eric Ebron had eight catches for 199 yards — a single-game record for a North Carolina tight end — while Quinshad Davis also hauled in a touchdown pass from Renner.

North Carolina was going for its first win against a top-10 opponent since beating then-No. 4 Miami here on a last-second field goal in 2004.

Instead, the Hurricanes are 6-0 for the first time since that season, keeping themselves in prime position in the division race to reach the ACC championship game.

That looked like an iffy proposition early when Johnson, who came in averaging 114 yards rushing, left with an undisclosed injury in the first quarter after running for 83 yards on eight carries.

Things got worse for the Hurricanes when receiver Phillip Dorsett suffered an apparent left knee injury on a reverse in that same period. He was helped from the field and eventually to the locker room before returning to the sideline on crutches late in the first half.

Miami got a boost when Ladarius Gunter returned a blocked field goal 67 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Crawford, a 5-foot-10 redshirt sophomore, kept the offense moving even as Morris kept turning the ball over against the Tar Heels' maligned defense.

How The GOP's Shutdown Over Obamacare Fell Short

Remember how that fight over the budget was all about Obamacare?

Seems like ancient history now, but House Republicans ostensibly shut down the government 17 days ago, demanding first a defunding, and, when that failed, a year's delay in the health law.

When it became clear that President Obama and Senate Democrats weren't going to yield to demands to stop or slow implementation of the administration's signature legislative achievement, Republicans looked for smaller changes.

They floated the idea of killing or delaying an unpopular tax on medical devices. Many Senate Democrats joined Republicans in a nonbinding vote of displeasure on the tax earlier this year.

The Republicans also looked to take away health insurance contributions for congressional and executive branch staffers. And they proposed to delay a temporary $63 annual per-person health insurance tax intended to build a fund to help pay for high-cost cases.

None of those things ended up in the final bill that reopened the federal government and raised the debt ceiling Wednesday night.

So what did?

Well, there was a little language related to the health law. It requires that the Secretary of Health and Human Services "certify to the Congress that the Exchanges verify" that individuals who get subsidies for premiums and cost-sharing are, in fact, eligible. And that the secretary "shall submit a report to the Congress that details the procedures employed by the American Health Benefit Exchanges to verify eligibility for credit and cost-sharing."

Sounds like a big deal? Not really. It so happens that the much-maligned "data hub" that's part of the health exchange already links to the IRS to verify income eligibility. So, basically, the law requires HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to write a letter explaining what the department is already doing.

But it's not just that the Republicans failed to make any changes to the health law in their 16-day tirade against the government. News coverage of the shutdown and potential default crowded out stories about the very rocky rollout of the health exchanges themselves.

As The Washington Post's Ezra Klein tweeted Wednesday:

Defeated, some Republicans admit misstep in linking Obamacare fight to shutdown

"This isn't some damn game!” Republican House Speaker John Boehner boomed from Capitol Hill earlier this month, three days after the federal government shut down. However you wish to characterize the past few weeks, one thing is for certain: The GOP lost this one.

“We fought the good fight, we just didn’t win,” a quieter, more conciliatory Boehner conceded on Wednesday in an interview with Cincinnati’s WLW radio station.

And now, this particular fight appears to be at its end. Senate leaders announced on Wednesday that they had struck a deal to reopen the government until Jan. 15 and raise the debt ceiling until Feb. 7, which would free up more time for budget negotiations. Republicans got very, very little in return.

On Wednesday afternoon, Boehner called all House GOP lawmakers to a private meeting in the basement of the Capitol Building, the same room where they have met almost daily to discuss, debate and even sing together during the shutdown, as they pieced together a strategy against Democrats, who from the beginning refused to negotiate with them.

Inside the meeting, Boehner urged fellow Republicans to join him in supporting the Senate deal and told them that they would “live to fight another day.” Before he spoke, his colleagues gave him a standing ovation.

As House Republicans filed out after the brief meeting, the lawmakers exuded mixed emotions: relief that they could finally move on from this mess; sadness at the result; frustration at those who came up with the strategy in the first place; pride that they stuck to their guns; and determination that they wouldn’t make the same mistakes again. Some conceded that the strategy refusing to fund the government unless Obamacare is defunded or delayed had failed.

“That strategy did not work,” Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart said. “This battle continues and will continue forever, just like the battle to control spending will continue. ... We have to pick areas where we are going to win, and that battle is never going to be easy. To me this was a tactical issue.”

“I don’t think the last six months have been all that constructive,” said Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock. “If the last two weeks have resulted in a different course of action moving forward, then I would say it will have been worth it, but if we go back to passing legislation that dies in the Senate ad nauseum, then I’m not sure that was a learning experience.”

But Rep. Justin Amash, a libertarian-leaning Republican from Michigan, pointed to one part of the exercise he saw as a victory: that it made President Barack Obama appear unreasonable.

“It proved to everyone that the president is completely unwilling to negotiate,” Amash said. “I think it really exposed the president as a man unwilling to compromise under any circumstances.”

Some of the chamber’s most conservative members, who had urged their leaders to fight to the end, expressed frustration that their message failed to resonate with voters.

“We tried from the very beginning to make this about bringing our families at least up to the same levels as corporations are being treated. We lost,” South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney said during a luncheon on Wednesday sponsored by the conservative Heritage Foundation. “We at least tried to make sure the political class didn’t benefit at the expense of American families. We lost that one as well.”

The 16-day shutdown and the impasse over the federal debt limit cost the economy $24 billion, according to an S&P estimate, and several polls show support for Republicans tanking in the month of October. Assuming the House and Senate pass the bipartisan deal negotiated by Senate leaders, Republicans will have little to show for their labor except for a short-term continuation of sequestration spending levels, income verification for the health exchanges established under Obamacare and a promise for a conference committee on the budget.

“It was worth it,” said Idaho Republican Rep. Raul Labrador. “Anytime you stand up for the American people, it’s worth it.”

One attitude not prevalent on Wednesday — at least not publicly — was anger aimed at Boehner, who allowed the conservatives to test their strategy against his original wishes. (Boehner had initially preferred to challenge Obamacare through the debt ceiling debate, but he gave in to demands within the party to use the government shutdown as a bargaining tool.)

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who once served as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of the House’s most conservative members, said “there is absolutely no talk” of a coup against Boehner.

To some conservative lawmakers, Boehner did the best he could with the cards he was dealt.

“I’ve actually been really proud of Speaker Boehner the past few weeks, I don’t think he should be ashamed of anything he has done,” Labrador said. “I’m more upset with my Republican conference to be honest with you. It’s the Republicans here who always want to fight, but they want to fight the next fight that have given Speaker Boehner the inability to be unsuccessful in this fight. So if anybody should be kicked out, it’s probably those Republicans and not Speaker Boehner.”

Like Republicans, it appears Boehner will also live to fight another day.

Tilera chips add muscle to x86 servers and free up computing capacity

New Tilera co-processors tuned for Hadoop, video and networking applications can free up the primary CPUs of x86 servers to run other applications.

The company's Tile-IQ series of chips will have up to 72 low-power CPU cores, which will bring extra computing muscle to speed up servers, said Bob Doud, director of processor strategy for Tilera. The Tile-IQ series includes the Tilencore-GX chips, which will come with nine, 16, 36 and 72 cores.

[ InfoWorld presents the Bossies 2013, the best open source software for networking, data centers, clouds, and more. | Get expert networking how-to advice from InfoWorld's Networking Deep Dive PDF special report. ]

Doud claimed servers with the chips will run network and Hadoop applications four times faster, and deliver a performance-per-watt that is 10 times better than that of systems without the co-processor. The co-processor plugs into PCI-Express slots and is designed to work alongside the main x86 chips, which typically carry up to 16 CPU cores.

Tilera's chips are based on the architecture used in existing Tile-GX chips, which were announced in 2009 and can also function as main CPUs in a server. Some data centers have custom installations in which Tile-GX chips are being used alongside x86 chips, and the company now has a specific product line for the co-processors and made them widely available, Doud said.

"We're going after the hyperscale side of datacenters," Doud said, adding that the company has seen an uptick in deployment of Tile-GX chips in x86 servers.

Co-processors like Intel's Phi chip and Nvidia's Tesla graphics chip are being increasingly used alongside CPUs in servers to handle complex calculations. Network processors are used at the front end of data centers for tasks like deep-packet inspection, firewall, load-balancing and network security.

Typically products like Tilera's co-processor end up being used in vertical markets for specific applications, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research.

More processors in a server could help speed up applications, but it comes down to workloads, McCarron said. The code also needs to be tuned specifically to the chip.

Most of Tilera's chips are being used for network and video processing, but Tile-IQ is flexible for general-purpose and distributed computing, Doud said. In addition to Hadoop, common Linux applications such as the Apache Web server, MySQL database and Memcached caching software have been ported for use on Tilera's chips. Tilera supports common programming tools like C++ and Java.

Given its success with networking, Tilera's chips may have hooks for implementation in distributed computing environments, but a lot depends on the infrastructure, McCarron said.

The chips have RISC (reduced instruction set computing) cores and up to 16GB of on-board memory. The nine-, 16- and 36-core chips plug into PCI-Express 2.0 slots, while the 72-core chip plugs into the faster PCI-Express 3.0 slot. The chips have 64-bit cores, DDR3 memory controllers and Gigabit Ethernet controllers.

The Tile-IQ chips will be made using the 40-nanometer process, but faster and more power-efficient chips based on the 28-nanometer process could come out next year, Doud said. The company did not provide pricing for the chip.

Apple cuts fourth-quarter orders for iPhone 5C: source

By Clare Jim and Paul Carsten

TAIPEI/BEIJING (Reuters) - Apple Inc has told manufacturers of its new iPhone 5C that it will cut orders of the smartphone for the final three months of the year, a source familiar with the supply chain situation said.

Pegatron Corp, a major manufacturer of Apple's new phone, had 5C orders reduced by less than 20 percent, the source told Reuters on Wednesday, declining to be identified because the information is sensitive.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, Apple's other manufacturer of the 5C, has had its orders for the same period reduced by a third, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The 5C and 5S were launched in September ahead of the year-end holiday season when sales tend to hit a peak. In the United States, the 5C is $100 cheaper than the premium 5S, which retails for $649 for the 16 GB model.

The cut in 5C orders will reinforce investor sentiment that the phone was overpriced and would not be well-received by consumers, some analysts say.

"This reflects a failure in Apple's pricing strategy," said Bevan Yeh, a Taipei-based senior fund manager at Prudential Financial Securities Investment Trust. "The price differentiation between 5C and 5S is too small. It's an iPhone 5 with plastic casing and isn't worth the price."

Spokesmen at Pegatron and Hon Hai declined to comment, while Apple could not be immediately reached for comment.

In China, one of Apple's most important markets according to Chief Executive Tim Cook, the 5C's reception has been lukewarm. Some local bloggers say the price difference between the 5C and 5S is too narrow.

Apple said previously that sales for the 5S and 5C in the first three days of their launch in September totaled 9 million, and that demand for 5S exceeded initial supplies. It did not give separate figures for the 5C and 5S.

Prudential, which does not own Apple shares, forecasts assemblers will ship around 23 million 5C units in the final three months of this year and 10 million in the first three months of next year.

Some analysts caution against correlating the cuts to Apple's supplier orders with poor sales, because of the complexity and opacity of the company's supply chain.

"We've seen this several times. There are too many moving parts in the supply chain to draw any conclusions," said Benedict Evans, who covers mobile and digital media at Enders Analysis, a research consultancy in London.

"We don't know what other suppliers they use or what inventory they already have."

Merkel faces tough coalition poker after Greens pull out

Berlin (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel faces a new headache after her search for a coalition partner turned into a one-horse race Wednesday, forcing her to haggle with the emboldened Social Democrats.

The Greens politely bowed out of further talks with Merkel's conservatives overnight, citing irreconcilable differences, leaving the Social Democrats (SPD) as Merkel's only potential partner, which will allow them to drive a harder bargain.

In fact, analysts say, SPD leaders will have to extract a high price on policy issues and ministerial posts to convince their sceptical rank-and-file members that the party should govern jointly with Merkel in a left-right 'grand coalition'.

"The collapse of the conservative-Greens talks has strengthened the SPD's negotiating position," said political scientist Nils Diederich of Berlin's Free University.

"But they are under massive pressure from their base to win concessions in different areas," he said, mentioning their demand for a national minimum wage, changes to European policy and more help for political refugees.

In September 22 elections, Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and their Bavarian allies the CSU scored a decisive victory.

However, their ballot box triumph was soured by the fact that they fell just five seats short of a ruling majority after their previous junior partners, the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), crashed out of parliament.

This has forced Merkel into a lengthy process of political horse-trading with potential allies that could drag on for many weeks.

The CDU/CSU has held two rounds of preliminary talks with each party and is set to meet the SPD again Thursday at 1100 GMT.

The SPD leaders, despite their disappointing election score, will likely now enter the talks with added swagger, hoping to extract key concessions if they enable Merkel to serve a third term.

The SPD, in a campaign fought on social justice issues, demanded a national minimum wage to help the working poor, greater "solidarity" with crisis-hit southern Europe, dual nationality for children of migrants and a cap on rental increases, while pledging to tax the rich more to pay for public spending.

For the popular chancellor, the only other options would be trying to rule in an unstable minority government or to call fresh elections.

A poll this week by Bild newspaper painted a less-than-rosy scenario for Merkel should German voters again be forced to the polls.

While the CDU again scored 42 percent, the survey suggested the FDP would again miss out on seats, while new eurosceptic party the AfD would make it into parliament, further confusing the political picture.

'Further intensive discussions'

SPD chief Andrea Nahles said she expects "further intensive discussions over policy positions" on Thursday after the campaign-trail rivals held an eight-hour marathon session deep into Monday night.

Thursday's talks should be shorter as Merkel is set to receive at 1700 GMT the EU president Herman Van Rompuy.

Merkel's team has said it hopes to announce this week whether it will take the next step, from "exploratory" to full-scale coalition talks with the SPD.

The Social Democrats, for their part, would seek to get their senior delegates to sign off on such a move at a party meeting Sunday.

The SPD has promised to let its 470,000 members vote on any coalition contract that their leaders propose -- with a 'yes' vote by no means a foregone conclusion given the mood in the party.

Having suffered two election defeats in a row, many members of the 150-year-old party believe the SPD should not humiliate itself by again jumping into bed with the CDU and governing in Merkel's shadow as they last did 2005-09.

In the end, though, most Germans expect another grand coalition, though few really want it. The Bild poll said that such an outcome is expected by 62 percent of Germans, but that only 32 percent favour such a left-right government.

Should the talks between the SPD and conservatives also end in tears, the Greens and Merkel's team have made sure not to slam the door shut.

Greens leader Cem Ozdemir refused to entirely rule out further negotiations with the conservatives in coming weeks, saying that, should the SPD bow out too, "it would be conceivable that we talk once again".

'The Walking Dead' rules ratings in strong return

NEW YORK (AP) — The zombies on AMC's "The Walking Dead" are relentless. The series returned for its fourth season Sunday with its biggest audience ever and is easily the most popular drama on television among young viewers this season.

The 16.1 million people who watched the AMC series Sunday shattered the show's previous record of 12.4 million, which was set for April's final episode of the third season, the Nielsen company said.

An estimated 10.4 million of those viewers were ages 18 to 49, which is the demographic sweet spot for those who sell television advertising. No broadcast network drama came close. NBC's "Blacklist," with 3.9 million viewers in that demographic last week, came in second. The most popular broadcast drama so far this season was the Sept. 24 showing of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." on ABC, with just under 6 million young viewers.

The discussion series that followed the premiere, "The Talking Dead," had 5.1 million viewers with 3.3 million in the young demographic, Nielsen said.

AMC President Charlie Collier credited series creator Robert Kirkman and his deputies for the strong showing. "Thanks to them, the dead have never been more alive," Collier said.

"NCIS" on CBS, with 18.3 million viewers, was the week's most popular drama. Only 3.6 million of those viewers were in the young demographic, making the show less valuable to many advertisers.

Fox News Channel's Megyn Kelly made a strong debut in the network's prime-time lineup last week. "The Kelly File" averaged 2.3 million viewers, or 38 percent more than Sean Hannity had been averaging in the 9 p.m. Eastern time slot since the beginning of July. Kelly was second only to Fox's Bill O'Reilly in popularity on cable news last week.

Despite all the new fall programming, last week's ratings indicated what truly rules in the season: five of the 13 most popular programs were either football games, football highlights shows or a football pregame show.

CBS won the week in prime time, averaging 9.2 million viewers. NBC had 8.4 million, Fox had 7.5 million, ABC had 7 million, Univision had 3.2 million, the CW had 1.7 million, Telemundo had 1.14 million and ION Television had 1.05 million.

TBS was the week's most popular cable network, averaging 4.2 million viewers in prime time. ESPN had 2.7 million, AMC had 2.2 million, The Disney Channel had 2 million and Fox News Channel had 1.8 million.

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 8.2 million viewers. ABC's "World News" was second with 7.3 million and the "CBS Evening News" had 6.4 million viewers.

For the week of Oct. 7-13, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: NFL Football: Washington vs. Dallas, NBC, 22.07 million; "NCIS," CBS, 18.33 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 17.64 million; "The Walking Dead," AMC, 16.11 million; "Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick," NBC, 16.02 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 14.84 million; "The Voice" (Monday), NBC, 14.64 million; "The OT," Fox, 14.11 million; "Dancing With the Stars," ABC, 13 million; "Football Night in America," NBC, 11.78 million.

Estimate doubled for vCJD carriers

Twice as many Britons as previously thought could be carrying the human form of "mad cow" disease, variant CJD.

Researchers believe one in 2,000 people in the UK is a carrier of the disease linked to eating contaminated beef.

Their estimate in the BMJ comes from studying more than 32,000 samples of human tissue removed during appendix operations carried out between 2000 and 2012 at 41 hospitals.

It remains unclear if any of these carriers will ever develop symptoms.

Early predictions of a vCJD epidemic didn't come to fruition.

To date, here have been 177 UK deaths from vCJD. Most of these occurred in the late 90s and early 2000s. There has been only one death in the last two years.

The rare, fatal disease progressively attacks the brain.

Will these people develop disease and can they transmit it? There are many questions we still do not know the answers to”

End Quote
Lead researcher Prof Sebastian Brandner

But it appears that relatively few who catch the infectious agent that causes the disease develop symptoms. People can be "silent" carriers for decades and not even know it.

The BMJ research identified 16 such carriers out of the thousands of appendix tissue samples studied.

Experts say many vital questions remain unanswered.

Since the link between vCJD and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), known as mad cow disease, was discovered in 1996, there have been strict controls to prevent meat from infected cattle from entering the food chain.

However, the average time it takes for the symptoms of vCJD to occur after initial infection is still unclear.

Preventing spread

This means people exposed to infected meat before the food controls were introduced continue to develop variant CJD, and may spread it to others.

Experience tells us that the disease could be transmitted from human to human via blood - in the UK, there have been three reported cases of vCJD associated with a blood transfusion.

Blood donor services take measures to ensure blood is not infected but there is no test to screen for vCJD, although scientists are working on this.

And there is currently no cure for the disease.

Prof Sebastian Brandner of University College London, who led the BMJ research, said: "We do not know what will happen.

"Will these people develop disease and can they transmit it? There are many questions we still do not know the answers to."

Prof Richard Knight, director of the National CJD Research and Surveillance Unit in Edinburgh, said the answers might not be known for decades.

In the meantime, surveillance was key, he said.

"You can see from the data available that its likely that we will get a secondary or tertiary wave of disease but its likely that these further waves will be small.

"Future clinical cases will be pretty small in number," he added.

Dr Graham Jackson, of the MRC Prion Unit at UCL Institute of Neurology, said: "Given the high levels of infection indicated by this research, it is now crucial we establish how many people in the UK harbour that infection in their bloodstream in order to adequately assess the risks of transmission through contaminated blood donations.

"Studies to develop new blood tests for CJD must remain a priority to assist with screening and protecting the UK blood supply."

Fitch puts US credit rating on negative watch

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Fitch credit rating agency has warned that it is reviewing the U.S. government's AAA credit rating for a possible downgrade, citing Thursday's looming deadline to increase the nation's borrowing limit.

Fitch has placed the U.S. credit rating on negative watch, a step that would precede an actual downgrade. The agency said it expects to conclude its review within the next six months.

Fitch says it expects the debt limit will be raised soon, but adds, "the political brinkmanship and reduced financing flexibility could increase the risk of a U.S. default."

Fitch is one of the three leading U.S. credit ratings agencies, along with Standard & Poor's and Moody's. S&P downgraded U.S. long-term debt to "AA" in August 2011.

Shoppers are more likely to buy a product from a different location when a pleasant sound coming from a particular direction draws attention to the item, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"Suppose that you are standing in a supermarket aisle, choosing between two packets of cookies, one placed nearer your right side and the other nearer your left. While you are deciding, you hear an in-store announcement from your left, about store closing hours," write authors Hao Shen (Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Jaideep Sengupta (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology). "Will this announcement, which is quite irrelevant to the relative merits of the two packets of cookies, influence your decision?"

In the example above, most consumers would choose the cookies on the left because consumers find it easier to visually process a product when it is presented in the same spatial direction as the auditory signal, and people tend to like things they find easy to process.

In one lab study, consumers were asked to form an impression of pictures of two hotel rooms on a computer screen, one of which was at the right of the screen and the other at the left, while listening to a news bulletin from a speaker placed on either side. Consumers found it easier to process the picture of hotel room located in the direction of the news and also indicated a greater preference for that room. In another study, consumers were more likely to choose soft drinks from a vending machine that broadcast a local news bulletin.

But things get a little more complicated if the signal is one we wish to avoid, like an unpleasant noise. In that case, people first turn their attention to the unpleasant noise in order to decipher the signal. Then avoidance kicks in as they voluntarily turn their attention away from the unpleasant signal.

In another set of studies, consumers examined pictures of two restaurants while listening to either annoying or pleasant music that came from their left or right side. The music was played for either a very short time (20 seconds) or a relatively long one (1.5 minutes). "The predicted impairment effect was observed when the unpleasant music was played for a longer timenow, it was the picture in the direction away from the music that was preferred," the authors conclude.
